Frequently Asked Questions

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based approach that focuses on understanding why behaviours occur and developing respectful, practical strategies to improve quality of life. It’s not about “fixing” behaviour—it’s about building skills, meeting unmet needs, and supporting wellbeing.

PBS is available to NDIS participants who display behaviours of concern that impact their safety, wellbeing, or ability to participate in daily life. To access PBS, a participant typically needs funding in the category:

  • Improved Relationships (or Behaviour Support in the new PACE format) – this covers Functional Behaviour Assessments, Behaviour Support Plans, and monitoring/reporting of restrictive practices.

In limited cases, Improved Daily Living funding may be used for a one-off Functional Behaviour Assessment to inform a future plan. If you're unsure, we’re happy to review your plan and provide guidance.

An FBA helps us understand the function or purpose of a person’s behaviour. It involves a range of assesssments that may include (but is not limited to):

  • Interviews with people who know the person well
  • Observations across settings
  • Reviewing incident data and behavioural trends
  • Quality of life assessments

The results help inform a Behaviour Support Plan that addresses the person’s individual needs in a respectful and effective way.

A BSP outlines proactive strategies, environmental adjustments, skill-building and response strategies tailored to the individual’s needs. It may also include strategies to reduce and eventually eliminate restrictive practices. BSPs are developed using the principles of Positive Behaviour Support and are designed to improve a person’s wellbeing and independence.

Restrictive practices are any actions or interventions that limit a person’s rights or freedom of movement, including physical restraint, environmental restraint, mechanical restraint, chemical restraint and seclusion. Under the NDIS, these must be:

  • Documented in a Behaviour Support Plan
  • Authorised through the appropriate state/territory body
  • Reported to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission

Our goal is always to reduce and eliminate restrictive practices where possible, using skill-building, environmental changes, and proactive strategies.
